K드라마가 이어준 인연, 올해 처음으로 눈을 봤다

한국과 가까운 거리에 있고 한국 문화가 널리 퍼져 있음에도 불구하고 대만에 사는 나는 코로나 시기까지 한국 문화를 접할 기회가 없었다.

사회적 거리두기로 격리된 생활을 하는 동안 할 일이 많지 않았는데 친구가 시간을 보내라며 한국 드라마를 추천해줬다. 친구가 추천해준 드라마는 ‘이번 생은 처음이라’ 였는데 나는 이 드라마에 단숨에 빠져들었다. 그때부터 다양한 한국 드라마를 보기 시작했고 나중에는 그 영향으로 한국어 공부도 시작하게 됐다.

2024년 봄 친구들과 함께 처음으로 한국을 방문할 기회가 있었다. 여행을 떠나기 전 한국 지하철에는 중국어나 로마자 표기가 많지 않아 한글을 보고 역 이름을 확인해야 한다는 이야기를 들었다. 하지만 인천공항에 도착하자마자 그 말이 사실이 아니라는 것을 깨달았다. 모든 표지판이 한글뿐만 아니라 영어, 일본어, 중국어로도 명확하게 표기돼 있어 관광객들이 이동하기 수월했다.

우리는 홍대에서 며칠을 머물다가 마지막 날 전통 한옥에서 숙박했다. 홍대의 활기찬 분위기와 다양한 가게, 맛집들은 나를 깊이 매료시켰다. 특히 연남동의 한 클라이밍센터를 방문했는데, 들어서는 순간 얼마나 넓고 깔끔한지에 감탄했다. 게다가 난이도가 낮은 코스라도 대충 만들어진 느낌이 전혀 없었고, 동작을 성공적으로 수행하면 중간 난이도의 문제도 해결할 수 있도록 홀드 배치가 신중하게 돼 있었다. 이 덕분에 클라이밍이 보다 많은 사람이 도전할 수 있도록 구성돼 있다는 느낌을 받았고, 이런 점이 나에게는 매우 인상적이었다.

여행 중 다양한 한국 음식도 맛보았다. 돼지고기 바비큐, 족발, 닭갈비 등은 모두 정말 맛있었다. 첫 한국 여행이 너무나 좋은 경험이었기 때문에 한국어 공부를 계속하기로 결심했다. 그해 후반에는 한국어를 배우고 클라이밍을 하기 위해 몇 차례 더 한국을 방문했다. 운 좋게도 한국어 선생님과 좋은 관계를 맺었고 클라이밍을 통해 새로운 친구들도 사귀었다.

2025년 1월, 다시 한 번 한국을 방문해 한국어 선생님과 클라이밍 친구들을 만났다. 이번에는 생애 처음으로 눈이 내리는 것을 경험했다. 도로와 건물이 새하얗게 덮인 풍경은 마치 드라마 속 한 장면처럼 느껴졌고 그 순간이 너무나 신비롭게 다가왔다.

관광객 입장에서 본 한국은 정말 멋진 여행지였고 사람들도 대체로 친절하고 예의바른 편이었다. 지하철에서는 승객이 꽉 찬 상황에서도 아무도 노약자석에 앉지 않는 반면, 일반석에서는 어르신들에게 자리를 잘 양보하지 않는 모습이 조금 의아했다. 한국은 나에게 매우 매력적인 여행지여서 앞으로 서울뿐만 아니라 다른 도시들도 탐방해보고 싶다.

Despite living in Taiwan, which is so close to Korea, and the prevalence of Korean culture, I didn’t encounter Korean culture until Covid. As there wasn’t much to do during the hotel quarantine period, my friend suggested me to watch some Korean dramas to kill the time. She suggested me “Because This Is My First Life” (이번 생은 처음이라), which I immediately fell in love of. Since then, I’ve been watching all kinds of Korean dramas and later started to learn Korean because of it.

In spring 2024, I had the chance to visit Korea for the first time with my friends. Before the trip, I was told that there weren’t much Chinese nor English in the subway and we had to look at the Korean characters to know which stop it was. However, once we got out from the Incheon Airport, I realized that that was not the case! All the signs are clearly marked in Korean, English, Japanese, and even Chinese, which makes tourists’ lives a lot easier. During that trip, we stayed in Hongdae for a few days before moving into a traditional Korean house on the last day. The vibrant vibes as well as various shops and restaurants deeply intrigued me. I even went to try out the climbing gym, The Climb Yeonnam. Upon entering, I’m immediately amazed by the size and the tidiness of Korean climbing gyms. In addition, I also like the style of their setting, as even for the easier grades’ problems, they didn’t set it sloppily. It feels to me that at the Korean climbing gyms, you can practice a lot more coordination moves and the setters would put the holds in the positions that you can still send the medium grade problems once you successfully performed the movement even if you’re a bit less precise or don’t have very strong finger strength. In my opinion, this makes the problems become more approachable for all climbers, which is something that I really like. Aside from climbing, we also tried out a lot of delicious foods like barbeque pork, Jokbal, and stir-fried spicy chicken (닭갈비).

The experience from my first trip was so nice that I decided to continue my study of Korean. Later that year, I traveled to Korea again a few more times just to learn Korean and climb. I’m fortunate enough to bond with my Korean teacher, Eunjin, as well as make friends from climbing. In January 2025, I flew to Korea again to visit Eunjin and my climbing friends. This time around, I happened to experience snowing for the first time! Seeing the roads and buildings covered in snow felt unreal to me and made me feel like I was in the drama setting!

Overall, for me as a tourist, Korea is a wonderful place to visit and the people here are quite nice and polite in general. However, I noticed that in the subway, even if it is super packed, no one would sit on the priority seats, but on the other hand, not many people would yield the normal seats to elderlies.

All in all, Korea appeals to me as a tourist and I would definitely love to explore cities other than Seoul in Korea in the future!
